REALM Academy Patient Workshop brings patient perspectives into Medical AI discussions
On 19 March 2026, the REALM project welcomed representatives from patient organisations and disease-oriented medical research charities across Europe to Brussels for a dedicated stakeholder workshop.
The interactive event created a space for open exchange on how AI-based medical software should be evaluated and regulated, with a strong focus on trust, transparency, and patient-centred approaches.
Through presentations, a live use case, and guided discussions, participants explored key questions related to trust in AI-supported medical decision-making, the balance between timely access and appropriate regulatory oversight, and what information and evidence matter most to patients when evaluating medical AI.
Discussions highlighted the importance of clear communication, data protection, and meaningful patient involvement in shaping the development and use of AI tools in healthcare. Participants also emphasised the need for transparency around how AI systems are developed, validated, and updated over time, as well as the role of patients in influencing access and governance.
The insights gathered will contribute to the ongoing work of the REALM project in developing more inclusive, trustworthy, and transparent approaches to Medical AI evaluation in Europe.
